Friends
Release Notes
No More Updates
With iPhone OS 3.0, Apple has decided that any time you try to call a phone number from an application other than the Phone application, you will be asked if you really want to make that call.
This means that whenever you tap a button in Friends, you will see an alert asking you to verify that you want to call the person whose button you just tapped. There is nothing that can be done to prevent this.
There is no way to avoid this alert, and there is nothing that can be done to Friends to prevent it. This is now, unfortunately, the way Friends works, and unless Apple decides to change the way the iPhone supports dialing numbers from other applications, there is no way that this could be changed in the future.
For this reason, it makes little sense to continue to offer Friends on the app store. The added time to tap a verification button means that the selling point of Friends, getting to call your closest friends more quickly, is now moot. There is no point in offering an app that cannot do what it promises.
This page will remain up to support folks who have downloaded and choose to still use Friends, but unless there's a chance to provide a real value to you, the user, there will be no more updates to Friends and it will no longer be available on the app store.
If you purchased Friends before, thank you. It was a joy to make Friends and I'm glad you found it useful, at least for the time that it was available.
Version 1.3 - 9/1/2008
- You can now choose to have more than 6 buttons per page. In the settings app, there's now a Friends settings section. By choosing it, you can choose between 6, 12 or 20 buttons per page. So if you're the kind of person who wants to have a lot of small buttons rather than a few large ones, now you can do it.
- Some user interface improvements and minor performance enhancements
Version 1.2.1 - 8/17/2008
- Some users could not add an email address to a button. This should be fixed.
- Names on buttons when no picture is available will now appear larger
Version 1.2 - 8/5/2008
- Load time has been improved.
- Swiping between pages is now much smoother. Pages should no longer “jump the tracks” as they used to.
- Mobileme fix: fixed a problem where Friends would get confused and lose contact info after a synch (this may have been related to MobileMe)
- You can now set a different picture for a person’s home and mobile number by changing the picture after the button is added
- It’s now possible to set a different photo for a button than the one available in your contacts list.
- Changing or deleting a person’s photo in Friends will no longer affect that contact’s photo in your contacts list.
- Deleting a contact from your contacts list will no longer delete it from Friends
- Changing a contact’s phone number in the contacts list will no longer change the contact’s phone number in Friends.
Version 1.1 - 7/28/2008
- It’s now possible to delete a button or change its picture by holding down on the button for a second as well as the old way of swiping across it
- improved loading time. Friends shouldn’t take as long to draw on load now.
- added a warning explaining that changes to a button’s picture will change the picture of the contact istself
- If you delete a person from your contacts list, any buttons for that person will now be deleted as well.
- Added tutorial movies to the app itself, so you don’t have to visit the website to view tutorial movies.
- a slight change in the layout of the application
- fixed the icon on the App Store
- If Friends happens to crash repeatedly, it will attempt to prevent further crashes by removing old buttons. Not a prerfect solution, but at least usable.
